Why You Need Need To Write Your Biography

Has it ever occurred to you to write your biography? I have always known that my story must be told someday.  I made up my mind to write my biography when I became emotional about the journey of the past ten years. Tears of gratitude ran down my cheeks unchecked. I remembered the seasons of deep anguish of heart when I almost tore out my heart in other to be relieved of the endless throbbing pain. I remember the time of fear, confusion, and uncertainty that trailed my footsteps. And I remember the derogatory treatment I received from those I called family. I remember the rejections, many failed attempts.  Being used by those I trusted, and the denials.

As I behold how far I have come, the successes and achievements that came after the dark seasons of life. I thanked God that I never gave up in spite of it all. Then, I knew that my story is one the world must read and hear about. Not to boost my ego, but as a light on the path of those that would someday trail the same path I walked.

Certain people need to tell their stories and write their biographies.  This is for their uniqueness, and ability to help others who are presently going through difficult paths.  Consider these vital questions. Must every story be told? How do you know if the world needs to hear or read your story? Does your story inspire even you?   You must have gone through some of the most profound experiences, and come out of them remarkably.  Which also leaves lasting memories in the minds of the readers.

Have you ever read the story of someone that left you pondering, or in tears? What of a story that strengthens the determination of a reader never to give up? Or a story that influences the reader to change his thinking and behavioural pattern? That is the reason behind biographies. Not just to entertain, but change perspectives, influence and impart to the reader. Biographies are our life epistles similar to the stories of biblical patriarchs.

As we get older, we ponder about the experiences, both negative and positive that have contributed to who we have become. Our innate desire to define and explore ourselves is one of our most basic impulses. To understand who we have become, we examine our responses to various situations, experiences and people.

People write their biographies for various reasons.  Whether as a social process or as a tool for internal reflection and personal growth. When we feel the need to make changes in our lives, reflecting on our journey is a necessary step towards making that change.

People write their biographies probably to seek insights by recounting significant moments in their lives through personal stories. For instance, cultural autobiographies examine how the cultural elements that we grew up with – family, friends, church, schooling, and the community. How they have contributed to our identity, sense of possibilities, and perception of importance.

Some authors may even use a fictional autobiography with an assumed persona. Autobiographies typically employ a strong personal voice using the first person. They often use storytelling techniques. Such as hooking the reader with a compelling introduction, dialogue, showing rather than telling, and using vivid descriptions.                               write your biography
